WBO considers Itauma for mandatory spot after knockout win over Franklin at heavyweight
Moses Itauma stopped Jermaine Franklin in five rounds to move closer to a WBO heavyweight title shot. The sanctioning body is now considering him for the mandatory position.
The 21-year-old handled Franklin across five rounds before ending it with a sharp left uppercut that left the American unsteady. A right hand followed, sending Franklin down face-first on the canvas, marking the first stoppage loss of his career.
That result sets the WBO into motion immediately.
“In light of Moses Itauma’s current position as the #1 WBO world-rated contender, and having defeated world-rated contender Jermaine Franklin by knockout in defense of his WBO Inter-Continental Heavyweight Championship, he has further affirmed his standing within the division as a rising star.
“Accordingly, I will formally recommend to the Championship Committee that Mr. Itauma be designated as the Mandatory Challenger in the WBO Heavyweight Division.”
The belt is currently held by Fabio Wardley, who defends against Daniel Dubois on May 9 at the Co-op Live in Manchester. That result will shape Itauma’s next move.
If Wardley keeps the belt, the matchup is unlikely given Ben Davison trains both fighters. Itauma also holds the top position with the WBA, giving his team another route toward a title fight.
If Dubois wins, a domestic fight becomes straightforward to make.
Itauma sets his feet early, works behind quick hands, and brings the uppercut through the middle when opponents square up.
After the fight, Itauma pointed toward Filip Hrgovic, though Hrgovic is scheduled to face Dave Allen on May 16. Another option is Murat Gassiev, the WBA Regular champion, who has already indicated he is open to the fight.
For now, Itauma’s position is clear. The sanctioning bodies are moving, and the next step will be decided by results above him.
