Promoter says Itauma could fight Gassiev if he defeats Jermaine Franklin

Moses Itauma could fight Murat Gassiev for the WBA “Regular” heavyweight title if he defeats Jermaine Franklin. The 21-year-old prospect returns to the ring on March 28 against Franklin, a durable contender who has previously gone rounds with several top heavyweights.

Gassiev’s promoter Al Siesta confirmed that the former cruiserweight champion would consider the matchup if Itauma handles Franklin in impressive fashion.

Speaking to Boxing Social, Siesta said:

“Gassiev is in camp now and hoping to fight end of June, beginning of July.

“We are negotiating with a few of the credible heavyweights.

“Our good friend Moses Itauma, who tried to disrupt the situation with Gassiev fighting Pulev.

“I love Itauma, I think he’s a great talent, but let’s see what he can do to Jermaine Franklin.

“If he can beat him in an exemplary manner and demolish like he always does, then why not?

“Gassiev will not be shy in fighting him, I guarantee you that.”

Gassiev moved up to heavyweight after dominating the cruiserweight division earlier in his career. He captured the WBA “Regular” heavyweight belt last December with a sixth-round stoppage of Kubrat Pulev.

An Itauma fight would present a major step up for the British heavyweight, but it is a possibility that depends entirely on his next outing.

For now the immediate test is Franklin, a fighter known for durability and experience at the top level. A convincing win would strengthen Itauma’s position and could quickly move him toward a title fight with Gassiev.
