Makhmudov fight set for April 11 as John Fury questions his level and confirms split
Tyson Fury’s April 11 fight with Arslanbek Makhmudov comes after John Fury said their relationship has been “destroyed” and raised concerns about his current level.
Fury (34-2-1, 24 KOs) has been out of the ring for 15 months since his split decision loss to Oleksandr Usyk in 2024. That defeat, and the earlier fight with Usyk, led to questions about the structure in his corner.
For the rematch, John Fury was removed from the setup. He was not part of the Malta camp and did not travel to Riyadh, where head trainer Sugar Hill Steward and Andy Lee oversaw preparations.
In a recent interview with Playbook Boxing, John Fury described the situation directly.
“My relationship with Tyson is destroyed”.
“Boxing destroyed it completely. I’ll say it on camera: I’ve never taken £10 off him in my life and I never will”.
“I don’t want Tyson’s money and I don’t need Tyson’s money”.
“Whatever he’s got, good luck to him. But don’t forget who built his story when he was a kid”.
“He didn’t build it himself, did he?”.
John Fury has long been a visible presence across his son’s career, from working the corner on certain nights to missing others entirely. His absence for the Usyk rematch followed criticism that too many voices were involved during the first fight.
He also questioned Tyson Fury’s current level ahead of the Makhmudov bout.
“I think he’s past his best, he hasn’t been for a while”.
“Tyson has been gone since the Deontay Wilder fights, they finished him”.
“Makhmudov is a problem for Tyson. I am the first one to say it”.
Fury is aiming to return as a three-time heavyweight world champion, but the split with his father adds another layer going into the fight.
