Eye damage forces doctor’s stoppage in punishing 130-pound unification

Emanuel Navarrete unified at 130 pounds Saturday night by breaking Eduardo Nunez down and forcing a doctor’s stoppage in Round 11. Sustained punishment to Nunez’s right eye left the ringside physician no choice.

Navarrete, 39-2-1 with 32 knockouts, adds another belt at 130 pounds with the stoppage. Nunez, 30-1 with 28 knockouts, had entered as IBF titleholder but could not withstand the late surge.

The fight shifted in Round 3 when Navarrete hurt Nunez with a left uppercut after breaking through the guard with straight shots. From there, Navarrete began to establish rhythm at mid-range, mixing the jab with chopping right hands and uppercuts through the center. Nunez tried to circle early, staying light on his feet, but Navarrete kept pressing and forcing exchanges.

By Round 5, it turned into a fight. Navarrete dug hooks to the body, then brought the uppercut back upstairs. Nunez answered with body shots of his own and attempted to close distance, but he was absorbing the heavier work. In Round 7, Navarrete let combinations go, snapping hooks and short uppercuts that visibly shook Nunez.

The right eye began to close in Round 9. A hard right hand and follow-up uppercut left Nunez unsteady. He kept coming forward, firing to the body, but he was walking into straight shots. In Round 10, blood poured from the damaged eye as Navarrete pinned him inside and landed in volume. Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., working the broadcast, called for the fight to be stopped.

Round 11 confirmed it. The doctor examined Nunez between exchanges and waved it off.

From a technical standpoint, Navarrete took command once he planted his feet and let the combinations go, driving the uppercut up the middle whenever Nunez bent at the waist. After he secured his range, he dictated the exchanges and forced Nunez to react. Nunez kept pressing and worked the body, but as the swelling closed his right eye, his defensive reads slowed and he was catching shots he couldn’t see.

No controversy. No hesitation.

Navarrete unified the division by breaking his man down.
