Wilder weighs 226.4lbs as glove dispute is resolved ahead of April 4 fight at O2 Arena
Derek Chisora came in at a career-high 266.7lbs for his fight with Deontay Wilder, then wore a Tyson Fury mask during the face-off. Wilder weighed 226.4lbs as a late glove dispute was resolved before the weigh-in.
Wilder’s team and the British Boxing Board of Control had to settle a glove issue hours before the weigh-in. It got resolved, but it tells you how tight the margins are this late in the week.
Chisora hit the scale first at 266.7 lbs. That is the heaviest of his career. Wilder followed at 226.4 lbs, giving up roughly 40 pounds on the night.
Chisora kept the pressure on at the face-off. He walked out wearing a Tyson Fury mask, dragging Wilder’s history back into view without saying much. Wilder did not bite. They spoke briefly, then embraced, but the message had already been sent.
Chisora kept his words simple.
“All I can say is, come to tomorrow night I am ready to die in the ring.”
“I look at this man right now, he said he is healed and is boxing well so we will see, I’m excited.”
Wilder stayed on his own track.
“I love fighting just as this man loves fighting. I just want to be right.”
“I had a lot of things going on but this time I’m healed and I’m ready. No injuries and 100 per cent.”
Forty pounds changes how the fight feels in the clinch, how the rounds wear, and how long a man can keep his feet under him.
