White expects resistance as Zuffa Boxing moves away from the IBF, WBC, WBA and WBO belts
Dana White says legal battles could follow Zuffa Boxing’s decision to move away from the traditional sanctioning body belt system. The promotion plans to recognize champions through The Ring rankings rather than the IBF, WBC, WBA and WBO titles.
The dispute surfaced during fight week surrounding Jai Opetaia’s cruiserweight title situation, but White’s position has been consistent since Zuffa announced its entry into boxing. The company intends to align its championship recognition with The Ring rankings rather than the alphabet-title structure.
White addressed the direction during fight week and dismissed the idea that Zuffa’s move is tied to crossover promotion between combat sports.
“You guys know how I feel about this crossover s*. Every time there’s a big UFC card or a big Zuffa Boxing card, everybody wants to talk about UFC versus boxing, MMA versus boxing. That’s not what this is,” White said.
“Zuffa Boxing is its own thing. We’re here to fix what was wrong with boxing for a long time – one guy as a massive favorite, terrible undercards, fights that never get made because promoters don’t want to risk their guys.”
White argued the promotion intends to match contenders against each other rather than building records through uneven matchmaking.
“Boxing’s problem was always that the best didn’t fight the best often enough,” he said. “We’re not doing any of that. We’re putting on competitive fights top to bottom, no tune-ups, no bullshit.”
He also criticized the practice of protecting undefeated records with late replacements.
“If you tune in to a Zuffa Boxing show, you’re going to see real fights, not 30–1 against a guy who took the fight last week.”
White acknowledged that abandoning the sanctioning-body structure could bring legal challenges.
“I see lawsuits coming,” he said.
The comment reflects the friction between Zuffa’s model and the organizations that regulate championship belts across most divisions. If the promotion continues building events around its own titles and rankings, fighters under the banner may compete outside the IBF, WBC, WBA and WBO championship structure while legal disputes unfold over how those titles intersect with Zuffa’s events.
