Winner moves into mandatory talks at 175 pounds
Callum Smith defends his WBO interim light heavyweight title against David Morrell on April 18 in Liverpool. The winner moves directly into range of a fight with Dmitry Bivol.
Smith, 31-2 with 22 knockouts, fights at home for the first time since 2019. Since then he has shared the ring with Saul Alvarez and Artur Beterbiev, then went twelve hard rounds with Joshua Buatsi to secure the interim strap. At 35, he understands distance, keeps a stiff jab, and punches straight through the guard when his feet are set.
“Fighting back in Liverpool is special for me,” Smith said.
“This is home – there’s nothing like walking out in front of a home crowd that’s supported you from the very start. It gives me a real lift and I plan to give them a big performance.
“Morrell is a top fighter, but I’m coming into this fight with a clear goal – to win and take another big step towards becoming a two-weight world champion.”
Morrell, 12-1 with 9 knockouts, is compact and explosive. He shifts angles, throws sharp counters off the back foot, and carries real snap in his combinations. His only defeat came against David Benavidez, where he learned quickly what sustained pressure at elite level feels like. He rebounded with a split decision over Iman Khataev and now steps into a hostile building against a seasoned champion.
“First, I want to thank God for this opportunity in my career,” Morrell said.
“I’m excited to showcase my talent in front of the great boxing fans in the UK. I’m preparing for an all-out war with Callum Smith on April 18. I’m coming for that belt.”
T If Smith controls center ring, doubles the jab, and forces Morrell to give ground, the Cuban will have to fight at a pace that drains his gas tank late. If Morrell slips inside the jab and makes Smith reset repeatedly, the tempo shifts in his favor.
The interim belt is a negotiating tool. Nothing more. The winner moves into serious talks for Bivol. The loser drifts back into the contender pack.
Smith has to show he can still fight at a world-class pace over twelve hard rounds. Morrell has to prove he can solve a disciplined puncher who sets his feet and works behind a tight guard.
If Smith establishes range behind the jab and keeps his right hand in play, he shapes the tempo and forces Morrell to reset. If Morrell closes the gap, lets his hands go in combination, and keeps Smith near the ropes, the exchanges grow difficult in a hurry.
