Anthony Joshua has returned to sparring months after the fatal December crash that killed two members of his team. The former heavyweight champion posted footage from Finchley ABC as he gradually resumes training.

Joshua has been away from the gym since December following a car accident in Nigeria that killed two members of his team, personal trainer Latif “Latz” Ayodele and strength and conditioning coach Sina Ghami. Joshua sustained minor injuries but stepped away from training while mourning the loss.

The footage shows Joshua banking rounds of controlled sparring at Finchley ABC, the gym where he began boxing. The session marks the first sign that his return to competition is moving forward after several months outside the ring.

Promoter Eddie Hearn has indicated that a comeback could take place later this year. Posting on Instagram, Hearn shared a photo of himself walking to the ring with Joshua and wrote a single word caption, “Loading,” hinting that an announcement may be approaching.

Speaking previously to BoxingScene, Hearn explained that the original plan for Joshua had been very different.

“Originally, the plan with AJ was for him to fight in March and then fight Tyson Fury in August,” Hearn said.

“That’s not happening. He’s not fighting Tyson Fury next.”

Hearn added that Joshua is still easing back toward a full training camp after the accident.

“He’s going to come back, I believe, in late summer, but physically he’s not yet in a position to return to camp.”

“So, for me, I’m looking at options to get him back in the ring in July time.”

Joshua has not fought since scoring a knockout victory over Jake Paul in December. That result kept him positioned among the recognizable names in the heavyweight division while negotiations around his next step continued.

A July return would place Joshua back into the heavyweight schedule during the summer stretch. The opponent remains unconfirmed, but his next appearance will determine whether he moves back toward major fights in the division.
